Native American Turquoise Jewelry is an American heritage that has been handed down to our nation from the Native American Indians of Southwestern United States since about 1870. The Native American Indians as well as many others in the Southwestern regions of the United States have made an industry out of Turquoise Jewelry and it is respected worldwide for its uniqueness and handmade qualities. Native American Turquoise Jewelry is generally made with American Turquoise from Arizona and Nevada and set in Sterling Silver. There are many forms and types of Native American Turquoise Jewelry which is made by Native Navajo Indians, Zuni Indians, Hopi Indians, Hispanics and Anglos of the American Southwest.
The Native American Indians discovered Turquoise in Arizona and New Mexico as early as 300 B.C. They worshipped the gemstone and believed is was put on earth from the great ones above. It was used early on in ceremonies and by medicine men for healing. As Turquoise became more plentiful Native American Indians began working the Turquoise, making it into Turquoise Beads and ornamental items that they could wear. In 1865 a Navajo Blacksmith by the name of Atsidi Sani learned how to work with Silver, soon after his Silver Jewelry became popular with the native peoples. In approximately 1870 Atsidi Sani figured out how to incorporate Turquoise into his Silver and thus became Native American Turquoise Jewelry. It was in the years shortly after this when the American West began to develop, tourism began, the Railroad made way through the Southwest and Settlers were coming west by the droves. Native American Turquoise Jewelry became very popular by everyone who visited or moved to the west! Turquoise has played a very important roll in the Southwestern regions of America for 2000 years!
