The Shonto Trading Post was founded in 1915, by John Wetherill and Joe Lee. Originally, supplies were brought in by wagon from Kayenta and water was obtained from the wash a couple miles up the trail from Shonto Spring. Today, you can visit the Shonto Trading Post and see that it still resembles its origin. Pawning was a way of life in the past and the natives would pawn their belongings for safe keeping or when in need of cash. The Indian Trader would give the native a certain amount of time to redeem the item, if they did not, the item would usually go dead after a 30 or 60 day grace period. We purchased a large collection of dead pawn from the Shonto Trading Post that went dead in the 1960’s. These are historic items that we have had for years and now they are for sale.
