Native Bands from the American Southwest are beautiful and have a lot of character. Native Bands and Silver Jewelry began in the Southwestern United States about 1865 when a Navajo Blacksmith named Atsidi Sani learned how to work Silver from the Spaniards who were in this are in search of Gold and Silver. Native Bands were some of the first types of Silver Jewelry made by the Navajo Silversmiths in the early years of Indian Jewelry. They were highly sought after by the Navajo people and it was not long before many Navajos took up Silversmithing to make a living.
By the 1920's, tourism had begun in the Southwest and Native Bands of Silver were one of the most popular item the tourists wanted for souvenirs. By the 1930's, Indian Traders from the Southwest were bringing Native Bands and Indian Jewelry out west to Southern California and Hollywood.
